Corpus Christi restaurants adapt as city water develops a funky taste

Current status: Lifted (as of 24/09/2026, 18:06). Older update notes in the history text may be outdated.

Restaurants in Corpus Christi, Texas, are adapting their operations as the city's tap water has developed an unpleasant taste, described by some as dirt or soap, over the past few days. Although city officials have stated the water is safe to drink and use, establishments like Southern Charm and HiHo are boiling water for beverages, purchasing extra bottled water, and offering canned sodas to customers as alternatives. Business owners express frustration over the lack of official communication regarding the cause of the water quality issue. Update (KRISTV, 23.09.2026, 15:45): The city of Mathis is under a boil water notice due to low disinfectant residuals. Extreme temperatures are now cited as a cause for Corpus Christi's water issues, which avoided a boil notice due to system upgrades and enhanced monitoring. All-clear (City of Corpus Christi, 24.09.2026, 18:06): The earthy or musty taste and odor were caused by increased naturally occurring organic levels from western reservoirs transported via the Nueces River to the O.N. Stevens Water Treatment Plant. Associated compounds were no longer detected in the source water as of Thursday afternoon. Most areas should see improvement by early this week, though lingering effects may persist in some residential areas.
