What’s in the Water: South Shore News Investigation finds high sodium and chloride levels
An investigation by South Shore News reveals that every public water system on the South Shore, Massachusetts, consistently exceeds the state’s health guideline for sodium (20 mg/L), with current levels ranging from 35 to 98 mg/L. Additionally, specific wells in towns like Kingston, Scituate, and Middleborough show chloride levels above the secondary standard of 250 mg/L. These elevated levels, primarily attributed to road salt accumulating over decades, are not considered official violations as they are advisory or aesthetic standards without legal enforcement.
