Sir John Franklin High School joins list with lead issues in water

Yellowknife's Sir John Franklin High School has reported high levels of lead and copper in its water, exceeding Health Canada guidelines. The YK1 school district informed staff and parents on April 1, 2026, that water fixtures show concentrations above the maximum acceptable level. As a result, the school continues to provide bottled water until further notice, a measure already in place earlier this academic year. Update (Cabin Radio, 30.09.2026, 02:05): Elevated lead levels are also confirmed at Echo Dene School in Fort Liard and Inualthuyak School in Sachs Harbour. A public health order has been issued for these locations, and affected fixtures are now out of service. Remediation measures are underway, and fixtures will remain out of service until retesting confirms compliance.
